🍔🍔🍔🍔🍔

Ryo, Nono, and Kayo of GUMBO fame were our billets this year, so we went to their show heavily biased in their favour since they have been such fun and thoughtful guests. In lieu of a starred review, we're giving out WackDonald's hamburgers instead, and we wholeheartedly give them 5/5 burgers!

This zany clown show takes on the imperialism of Western fast food with unbelievable energy, joy, and random shenanigans. We were laughing from beginning to end, even as we were trying to guess what the hell was about to happen next. GUMBO's satirical vignettes are endlessly wacky and unexpected. This is a show unlike anything you have ever seen or will see again!

Are you lovin' it? sold out all of its shows, and there was significant buzz in the Fringe queues about this trio from Osaka. In particular, it will appeal to Fringers who love a performance that defies expectation, and especially those who appreciate silliness, clowns, slapstick, and poop jokes. We hope to see them back in Victoria next year!

The Victoria Fringe Festival, presented by Intrepid Theatre since 1986, has become a cornerstone of the city’s arts scene, known for its unjuried, anything-goes approach to performance. For Carmunist and Septimus, Fringe is the highlight of the year. We’ve been involved as volunteers for more than a decade, and more recently, we’ve opened our home to performers as billets. Reviewing Fringe shows is something we’ve talked about for some time, and now we’re putting our experience as fiction editors and theatre stans to work, offering our thoughts and workshop notes for as many performances as we can attend.
